If you plan to keep something very personal (like the fact that your magic has been unfairly taken from you by a Fairy Council member who doesn’t listen to reason) a secret, then you can count on:

a. it staying a secret.

b. people finding out something happened, but not the details.

c. everything coming out.

Answer:

C. You might as well have taken a full-page ad in the newspaper and hour-long commercials on every TV station. Even penguins on the South Pole will know what happened. If there were people on the moon, they would know about it too.

I couldn’t believe my parents were making me go to my Saturday sprite spell class. My parents kept pointing out how I promised to go to these classes in return for them letting me go to humdrum school and that just because I lost my magic didn’t mean I could change the deal. Either my parents have totally forgotten what it was like to be a kid, or they had it hard as kids and they think these kinds of situations will make me a better grown-up one day. I’ve never understood why being miserable now was supposed to teach me how to be a better grown-up later. When I’m a parent I’m never going to be mean to my kids like this. I also won’t make them eat Brussels sprouts. I’m taking notes so I never forget what it’s like to be a kid.

I dragged my feet as I walked along the sidewalk. Maybe there would be a giant storm and a tornado would sweep me away before I could get there. Or I could be kidnapped by a wandering circus and forced to clean up after their elephants for the rest of my life. That would teach my parents. They would appreciate me once I was gone. Every time they saw an elephant they would cry about how they missed me, and how they would treat me so much better if they had a chance to do it all over again.

I could only imagine what the other sprites would say if they found out I’d lost my magic. I didn’t know any sprites who had had the council take away their abilities. Usually they only took away powers from fairy godmothers who had really messed up. All I had done was save Katie’s science project and everyone was acting like I borrowed a dragon and used him to burn down a humdrum town. I kicked a rock and watched it fly down the sidewalk. Winston, who was walking with me, whimpered.

“Sorry, I don’t know what you’re saying. Until the council changes their minds I can’t understand a word.” I kicked another rock. “It’s like everyone wants to torture me.”

Winston harrumphed. Even though I couldn’t understand him I was willing to bet he was accusing me of being too dramatic. This coming from a dog who acted like it was a national emergency when we ran out of dog biscuits. You would think his fur was on fire the way he behaved when the box was empty.
